Daily Wireless
The idea of free and/or shared wifi has great appeal. There are huge
numbers of wifi-capable computers around. Spectrum is free, and no licensing
is required, so anyone with a wireless router can offer service. It's only
natural to think that there must be some way to mix such appealing ingredients
to cook up some real revenue. Still, there haven't been any great successes.
Free municipal wifi in particular has been a major disappointment. But that
isn't stopping Israel-based startup Jungo Ltd. It thinks that it can help some
service providers succeed where others have failed.

The advanced home gateway is the telco's foot in the consumer's door -
and a relatively new class of telecom customer premises equipment (CPE). And
the rollout of ultrafast next-generation broadband access networks (such as
fiber or VDSL2) carrying triple-play services is focusing a lot of attention
on this new adjunct to the digital home. The Home Gateway Initiative (HGI)
industry standards group defines a home gateway as 'a device that acts as a
hub between the home environment and the broadband network. Under the control
of the service provider, it simplifies the user experience when utilizing
broadband services.'
