Detailed Installation Instructions for USBTester

NOTE: The instructions on this page are for the latest USBTester version released. To install an older version of USBTester, refer to the installation instructions in the USBTester User's Manual for your USBTester version.

System Requirements

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

  • A standard EHCI USB host controller PCI or CardBus card through which the test devices can be connected to the test platform.

  • Low-/full-speed USB devices need to be connected to the test platform through a high-speed USB hub.
When using USBTester with a USB bus analyzer [4.1], connect the analyzer between the high-speed USB hub and the low-/full-speed test device, as demonstrated below.

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

  • OS: Windows XP with Service Pack 2.

NOTE: USBTester may also work with newer versions of Windows but this has not been tested for the current version.

  • Any x86 32-bit processor.

  • The test application requires the .NET framework v2.0.
If this framework is not installed on the test platform, it will be downloaded and installed by the test application when it is first executed.

Preliminary Information

Before installing USBTester, note the following:

  • You must have administrative privileges in order to install USBTester on Windows.

  • In order to run the tests, the native OS USB stack has to be replaced with the USBTester stack  for the host controller card through which your test device is connected. This is done automatically by USBTester after you select the desired host controller card from the test application's Host Controller Selection dialogue. When the test application is terminated, the USBTester stack is unloaded and the native OS stack is reloaded for the relevant card.

Note that since USBTester replaces the standard Windows USB stack for the selected controller card, devices connected through this card that require a specific class driver and/or application - such as mice, keyboards, etc. - are not expected to function normally while the test application is used.
