DriverCore
for PDAs
was designed to support the specific needs of manufacturers of handheld computers and smart phones.
Increasing number of PDAs are required today to communicate with various communication peripherals in
order to enable broader set of mobility features to the user.
Establishing internet access via mobile modems or wireless cards have become a standard requirement
from any modern handheld computer or mobile phone.
The various types of communication peripherals originally supported different connectivity standards such as Ethernet,
Bluetooth or serial communication. Each connectivity interface was
supported by various embedded applications on the PDA or the phone.
As an opposite design requirement,
recent PDAs are created to be smaller and more portable, causing a need for minimalist, economical and convenient design.
USB has become the de-facto solution for such cases, enabling high-speed data transfer rates,
and compatible with every common operating system.
DriverCore provides manufacturers PDAs, smart
phones and handheld computers the ability to utilize any USB communication devices within the PDA's
operating systems in various forms, including serial interface (Virtual COM port), Ethernet, Infrared and Bluetooth
(via the Object Exchange Protocol), and more, thus enabling to continue and
use the original applications to control and communicate with the recently re-designed USB peripherals.
Manufacturer Benefits
DriverCore allows connecting various communication USB peripherals to the handheld platform or the PDA.
DriverCore enables to support applications which still use other interfaces (e.g. Infrared, Bluetooth, Ethernet),
in order to communicate with new USB devices such as modems, wireless cards and more.
The DriverCore integration into the system is transparent
to the end-users, and does not require significant systems update, special training or any other adaptations.
End User Benefits
The end users will benefit from a growing amount of mobility features
supported by their PDA or mobile phone.
The end users will continue to work using familiar applications.
No learning of new interfaces or procedures is required.
USB is well known and considered
industry standard, it is commonly used, intuitive and supported in almost every platform.
