To give customers a choice of operating systems for its Bluetooth-enabled cable solutions, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) entered into an agreement with Jungo Software Technologies Inc. to add Jungo’s Linux residential gateway software onto TI’s broadband cable modems. The two companies will provide a demonstration of this technology at the upcoming California Cable Television Association’s Western Show later this month (see www.jungo.com/openrg/products.html and www.ti.com/sc/cablemodem).

The demonstration will highlight TI’s new Bluetooth-enabled cable modem reference design using Jungo’s OpenRG – a complete Linux-based residential gateway software platform. The demo includes TI’s DOCSIS 1.1 code running on Jungo’s Linux based operating system, as well as data over Bluetooth, Firewall, network address translation (NAT) virtual private network (VPN), web based management, simple network protocol management (SNMP) and dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP).

“This agreement underscores our commitment to provide multiple operating system and wireless networking options to respond to our customers needs,” said Eric Dewannain, general manager of TI’s cable broadband communications business unit. “Bluetooth is expected to be in 69 million appliances by 2005. It is one of the top wireless technologies revolutionizing the personal connectivity market and Jungo’s Software complements our solutions.”

“Jungo is focused on providing a complete software infrastructure solution for broadband residential gateways,” said Ofer Vilenski, president and chief executive officer for Jungo. “We are pleased TI has selected us to demonstrate our OpenRG software, which is powered by TI’s cable modem and Bluetooth chipsets. TI customers will benefit from turnkey software infrastructure that will enable them to get to market faster with a powerful product.”

OpenRG is a complete software solution with drivers, a Linux-based operating system and broadband residential gateway applications including:

  • Home Networking
  • NAT
  • Security
  • Voice over Internet Protocol
  • VPN
  • Zero Configuration Networking
  • Network Management

These features combine to allow standard Integrated Access Device (IAD) to become a sophisticated revenue-generating appliance, mutually beneficial to the system vendor, the service provider and to the end user.
