DTA s.r.l, started up in Pisa, Italy in the early ‘90s, is the very first Italian company to develop, design and manufacture a complete line of professional cooled digital CCD cameras.

The continuous developments in imaging technology have created an ongoing demand for more accurate, more efficient, and higher capabilities research utilities. Today's scientific devices' manufacturers are also required to provide compatibility with various platforms and operating systems used by customers, and continuously invest time and efforts in R&D, along with the necessity to remain one step ahead of their competitors by shortening development cycles and time to market.

DTA s.r.l. chose Jungo's WinDriver PCI for their FDL-PCI, a fast parallel PCI interface card used across their cooled digital CCD camera series. The FDL-PCI is based on a QuickLogic FPGA, supporting bus-mastering DMA data transfer reaching the maximum attainable PCI bus bandwidth (133MB/s).

The FDL-PCI communicates with the CCD camera allowing configuration of all of the camera's settings as well as fast data transfer to the host PC.

“While the hardware development took us months of work, we were able to develop the required "data grabber" to allow fast image transfers from the CCD camera to the PC in a few days and in a very easy way we never thought possible”, said Manuele Turini, FDL-PCI Project Manager.

DTA requirements for the FDL-PCI were high performance data transfers and compatibility with all Windows operating systems as well as Linux. WinDriver gave them the ability to directly access their hardware resources using a user mode wizard, with no prior Kernel knowledge or driver development experience.

WinDriver offered an easy-to-use API with full support for DMA, guarantying a high performance solution. The driver generated by WinDriver supports all the operating systems required by DTA, saving considerable time and eliminating the need for unique development to support each operating system.
