PLDA uses Jungo's WinDriver PCI Software

PLDA uses Jungo's WinDriver PCI Software
Learn on yet another successful integration of our products

Learn how PLD Applications, a world leader in PCI IP core development, uses Jungo's WinDriver PCI software to create the software development kit provided with their products. PLDA chose to base their hardware access APIs on Jungo's reliable and efficient tool, thus avoiding a complicated and long software development project.

PLD Applications designs and sells a wide range of ASIC and FPGA interfacing solutions for the PCI Express, PCI-X, PCI and derivative protocols. The company offers complete solutions, including IP cores, hardware, software, consulting services, and comprehensive technical support provided directly by the IP designers.

"PLDA is the largest provider of IP cores for the logical and transport layers of PCI, PCI-X and PCI Express," according to A Guide to High-Speed Interconnects, published by The Linley Group, Inc. ©2006

Founded in 1996 and profitable since its inception, PLDA is privately owned. The company maintains offices in California and France, and has a strong international Distributor's network.

Aiming to provide their customers with a comprehensive solution, PLDA's developers faced the difficulty of being a hardware-oriented company that is required to create software based tools that will enable their customer to communicate with their hardware, and will also assure high performance and high stability.

Instead of engaging a full-scale software project PLDA chose to focus on its core expertise of hardware design and used Jungo's WinDriver PCI to power the software development kit provided with their IP controller packages.

The SDK is based on the PLDA_API library, developed using WinDriver PCI. The library includes various functions for initializing and accessing PLDA boards, implementing buffer allocation and interrupt handling.

As opposed to USB development, which is mostly generic, PCI family based devices' accessing is almost entirely a hardware specific process. Theses APIs facilitate the development for PLDA's customers, eliminating the need to learn the boards' full specification.

The Kit includes several tools that able the developers to interact with a prototyping board using GUI wizards. With these tools, PLDA's customers can access, view, and write to their board.

The tools also provide several testing options, among them DMA testing (both Direct and Scatter-Gather modes and a DMA demo that is used to measure data transfer rates), various memory types testing (SRAM, Flash, SDRAM) and interrupt testing.

WinDriver PCI gave PLDA's developers the ability to create the PLDA_API library without the need to implement the software-hardware connectivity on their own, or to be familiar with kernel level programming. The generic PCI handling APIs, provided by WinDriver, allowed full and intuitive PCI software functionality implementation. The APIs were used as a foundation for functions that were specifically designed for PLDA's boards. The development was maintained in the user mode; no previous driver development knowledge or experience was required from PLDA's engineers.

WinDriver had proved to be a firm, reliable and high performance solution, enabling PLDA to provide their customers with a software development kit that will drive the most out of their hardware.

About WinDriver

Jungo's WinDriver™ automates and simplifies the development of user-mode device drivers and applications for USB / PCI / PCI Express / CardBus / PCMCIA / PCI-X / and CompactPCI under Windows 8 / Windows 7 / Vista / Server 2008 / Server 2003 / XP / XP Embedded, and Linux. WinDriver provides a complete solution for creating high performance drivers and custom hardware access applications, thereby enabling device manufacturers to focus on their driver's added-value functionality, instead of on operating system internals and the DDK. Enhanced Built-in support is available for Actel, Altera, Atmel, Cypress, National Semiconductor, PLDA, PLX, Microchip, Netchip, QuickLogic, Silicon Laboratories, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Xilinx.
