WinDriver for PCI Express PCI Express (PCIe) is an I/O interconnect bus standard that provides larger bandwidth and greater scalability than the standard PCI 2.2 bus.

PCIe features a serial two-way connection, which transfers data using pairs of point-to-point data lanes. Each lane supports a maximum bandwidth of approximately 500MB/s, which allows for a maximum bandwidth of 500-8,000 MB/s, depending on the number of lanes. This provides a great improvement over the single parallel architecture of the traditional PCI bus, which supports a maximum bandwidth of 132MB/s. In addition, PCIe uses switches that can be used to control the data flow on the bus, thus allowing each device to use its full bandwidth capabilities.

The PCIe architecture was developed to provide suitable support for high-speed interconnects that require high transfer speeds, such as USB 2.0, InfiniBand, 1394b and Gigabit Ethernet. PCIe provides an ideal solution for the growing number of devices that require high bandwidth, such asHard drive controllers, video streaming devices and networking cards.

Beginning with version 7.00, WinDriver provides APIs for easily accessing the PCI Express extended configuration space. In addition, WinDriver fully supports the standard PCI features supported by PCIe, which is, by design, completely backward compatible with the traditional PCI bus. You can also use WinDriver's PCI API to easily communicate with PCI devices connected to the PC via PCI Express-to-PCI bridges and switches (e.g. the PLX 8111/8114 bridges or the PLX 8532 switch, respectively).
