New technology enables hardware vendors to remotely test and diagnose their hardware in remote locations.
April 25th, 2000 (Jungo, Israel): Jungo Ltd. announced today the release of the beta version of its a revolutionary product, which enables remote access to ISA / ISA PnP / PCI / cPCI / USB based hardware, through any network connection. The new technology is integrated into 'WinDriver' - Jungo's successful device driver development kit, enabling developers to benefit from the WinDriver advantages and features, while working on target hardware plugged into an embedded system or any other remote system. The Remote Access Technology is implemented on all operating systems supported by Jungo: Windows 9x , NT,2000, CE, NT Embedded, Linux, Solaris, VxWorks and OS/2.
Using this new technology any target system hardware can be scanned, detected and tested from any remote location in the world. The device driver code can be then automatically generated for the target hardware and remote debugging capabilities allow concluding the device driver development for the target hardware.
Target Markets
This new technology provides benefits to the following markets:
Driver Developers
- Remote Driver Debugging; Drivers can now be debugged, step by step, even when the hardware is located at the customer's site.
- Embedded systems driver development; When developing drivers for a 'headless' embedded system, the remote agent enables diagnostics and code generation for the hardware through the network.
- Remote Development; Device driver developers can use the Remote Access Technology to write drivers for hardware which is located in a different geographical region.
Hardware Vendors
- Electronic Support; Hardware vendors can use the Remote Access Technology to provide hardware support and diagnostics over the web.
Enterprise Management
- Hardware Inventory; The graphical user interface can be used to monitor all hardware devices in the organization, providing a convenient hardware inventory solution.
- System Administration; System administrators can use the graphical interface to view remote hardware, so that problems such as matching drivers to hardware can be solved remotely.
The Solution:
The Remote WinDriver, the Remote Hardware Debugger and the Remote Debug Monitor may be installed on the host machine and access any target ISA / ISA PnP / PCI / cPCI / USB based hardware which is connected to the network, including hardware plugged into embedded systems. The communication is done through a TCP/IP network connection (LAN, WAN, Dialup connection, etc.) and is supported on Windows 9x, NT, 2000, Windows NT Embedded, Windows CE, Linux, Solaris, VxWorks and OS/2.
"This technology enables a wide range of hardware access related activities to be easily implemented, using an off-the-shelf tool." Said Ofer Vilenski, president of Jungo. "Network administrators, hardware vendors and chipset manufacturers can now control and trace hardware and solve problems for any customer in any location in the world, from their support or development site. This lowers the cost of support, and quickens response times for developers, support personnel and system administrators".
Device driver developers can now benefit from WinDriver's advantages (OS compatibility, High performance, Stability and more) when developing drivers for target hardware in remote location. Remote WinDriver is ideal for developers of drivers for embedded systems hardware. The hardware is plugged to the target system and the development is done on the host system. The new technology adds more capabilities to the developer, such as debugging and fixing the driver code and then testing it, even after delivering it to the customer.
"WinDriver dramatically shortens the development time of device drivers for embedded systems. The whole development cycle is performed from the host machine, using user-mode tools and compilers, while the hardware is plugged into the embedded system" said Derry Shribman, R&D manager of Jungo.
"The importance of Remote WinDriver for companies with a worldwide customer base is clear. There is no need to send engineers to distant location or to wait weeks while the hardware is shipped from one place to another" added Mr. Vilenski.
