TRADE ASSOCIATION SETS ITS SIGHTS ON LARGE NETWORKS
The 1394 Trade Association, which promotes
the IEEE 1394/FireWire multimedia standard, has formed a Network Working
Group to develop specifications for large networks (IP over 1394), home
networks and legacy applications. The group also will address issues involving interoperation
with Ethernet-based systems.
The group is headed by Michael Johas Teener, who originated the
1394/FireWire Standard in the 1980s while at Apple Computer. Vice Chairs are Scott Fierstein
of Microsoft and Steven Harris of BridgeCo.

UK PASSES 500,000 BROADBAND CONNECTIONS, MORE THAN 20K ADDITIONS PER
WEEK
The UK now has over half a million
high-speed broadband connections, representing a 54% increase since the
beginning of 2002. Oftel,
the official industry regulator for the UK, said that more than 20,000
broadband connections are being added per week, outstripping the
equivalent demand for mobile phones and dial-up Internet when they were
first introduced.

- In February, BT cut its wholesale line
rental price for consumer connections from £25 to £14.75 a month. The price cuts resulted in
end-user ADSL costs below £30 (US$43) among resellers of the service.

GOVERNMENT PUBLISHES DRAFT COMMUNICATIONS BILL
The government of the UK published a draft Communications Bill
outlining its proposals for regulating the communications industry. Highlights of the plan include
measures to:
- simplify the regulatory environment by
consolidating the five regulatory branches of OFTEL into a single body
- liberalize the rules on media
ownership
- abolish all rules on foreign ownership
of communications, thereby allowing US, Australian or Canadian
companies the same rights to buy licenses in the UK as currently
permitted to EU companies
- ensure that public service
broadcasting has as secure a future, protecting the BBC's unique
status
- clarify the regulatory regimes for
telecommunications and the use of spectrum.
INTEL ANNOUNCES 802.11A/B WIRELESS CHIPSET, 10 GIGE ADAPTER
Intel announced a number of new wireless LAN, Gigabit Ethernet and
10 Gigabit Ethernet products, including an internally developed dual
band wireless LAN chipset.
Intel's dual band wireless LAN chipset will be available later this year
and is compliant with both the 802.11b and 802.11a standards. Other new products include:
- an Intel PRO/Wireless 5000 LAN Dual Band Access Point
- a 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapter that fits in a standard PCI-X
slot
- a single-chip 10 Gigabit Ethernet controller
In addition, Intel noted that
Dell Computer has decided to integrate Intel’s Gigabit Ethernet
connections in the latest Dell OptiPlex desktop PCs. Previously, Gigabit Ethernet was a standard feature only on
Dell’s servers and higher end workstations.

REDBACK ADDS VIRTUAL ROUTER AND MPLS TO ITS SMARTEDGE 800 ROUTER
Redback Networks enhanced its SmartEdge 800
Router with the ability to support thousands of virtual routers within a
physical router. Each
virtual router has its own forwarding table, its own set of IP routing
protocols (BGP and IS-IS), and its own access to network services, such
as DNS. In addition,
Redback added MPLS, IP multicast and other QoS enhancements to the
platform. Additional
hardware interfaces supported on the SmartEdge 800 Router now include
OC-12/STM-4 ATM, OC-3/STM-1 ATM, channelized T3 and clear channel DS-3.

RIVERSOFT ADDS NETWORK MANAGEMENT EXTENSIONS FOR MPLS AND ATM
RiverSoft has enhanced its Network
Management Operating System (NMOS) with new extensions for MPLS and ATM. The network management solution
offered by RiverSoft NMOS and Fault Manager uses advanced modeling
techniques to map the complex network inter-relationships inherent in
VLANs, VPNs and applications.
The MPLS Advanced Management Extension autodiscovers the
existence and connectivity of MPLS VPNs.
It also carries out root-cause analysis of faults in MPLS
networks and correlates physical faults and any brown-out conditions
with MPLS-specific alerts.
The new ATM extension provides visibility into the setup of dynamically
created circuits between network points.

FUJITSU PLANS 6X BOOST
IN HDD CAPACITY
Fujitsu has developed new read head and
media technologies supporting hard disk drive (HDD) recording densities
of up to 300 gigabits per square inch (Gb/in2). The company expects commercial
introduction within two to four years of 2.5" hard disk drives with
capacities up to six times the recording density available today. Within four years, Fujitsu further expects to achieve
capacity increases of up to 360GB -- enough to record 76 high-quality
DVD movies.

Last month, CableLabs issued
specifications for CableHome 1.0, which aims to extend advanced
network services from DOCSIS cable modems to PCs and other devices
inside the home.
Specifically, the CableHome QoS specification defines a standard
signaling and management mechanism for applications to establish and
maintain service sessions with different levels of quality across the
home network and cable network.
It is anticipated that certification tesving of
CableHome 1.0 products will begin in the latter half of this year.
