| Feature | Description | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| High Performance | USB 2.0 High Speed throughput, enabling transfer of high speed digital media and data to and from USB storage | Enable streaming of MP3 media back and forth from the in car audio system |
| Host/Device Support | Enable connecting as storage device to both PCs (e.g. to log test data) and to USB flash memories (e.g to receive MP3 files) | Enable connectivity of the automotive device to over 6 billion devices |
| Small Footprint and broad OS support | The stack was designed for low memory consumption and to support variety of standard and proprietary operating systems | Low cost BOM and flexibility in architecture |
USBware for Automotive was designed to support the specific needs of automotive multimedia manufacturers. USBware enables the implementation of USB connectivity in automobiles, allowing in-car multimedia and infotainment systems to communicate directly via USB with MP3 players, iPods, thumb drives, 3G dongles, WiFi routers and other devices.
Typical in-car uses for USB connectivity include:
Multimedia systems:
- Connecting USB flash drives within the car and enabling end-users to manage, use or transfer their pictures, audio or video files onto their in-car infotainment systems or radios
- Streaming digital audio or video content using PMPs, MP3 or MP4 players connected to the car stereo
- Providing high quality audio playback and steaming from Apple iPod, iPhone and iPad devices via Jungo's high quality and proven embedded USB iPod drivers
Connectivity Box:
- Offering WiFi or wireless connectivity by enabling vehicle owners to insert USB WiFi or USB wireless dongles, and easily connect to their preferred wireless networks
- Offering 3G and 4G connectivity via USB mobile broadband modems
Mobile Handsets:
- Connecting mobile handsets into embedded hands free systems Streaming media to and from audio systems
- Synchronizing mobile content with users' in-car databases (pictures, contacts, calendars etc.)
- Using smartphones to provide internet access to the infotainment system, e.g Nokia Terminal Mode and Tethering
- Streaming smartphones applications to infotainment system screen, e.g via VNC
Navigation systems:
- Uploading maps and other data onto the navigation system
- Upgrading firmware of the navigation system
Testing:
- Logging test data from the car to the PC
- Uploading test suites and firmware to the car
Configuration:
- Storing driver-specific configuration data (such as chair positioning, radio tuning, etc.) on flash drives and configuring the automobile automatically using this data
The above use-cases require robust and extensive USB implementation, ranging from device to host and including class drivers such as USB mass storage and audio that feature high speed streaming of data.
Jungo provides a complete embedded USB stack required to implement USB connectivity in automotive devices. USBware features scalable architecture, supporting a variety of off-the-shelf USB controllers and operating systems, in addition to supporting non-standard controllers and proprietary operating systems.
This enables automotive device manufacturers to select the architecture best suitable for their device, and furthermore enables existing devices to easily add USB connectivity in future designs.
