What to do in case of of an OS crash on Windows when using WinDriver

In case of a system crash that results in the display of the Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD), or a restart of the system, send us a problem report with a description of the steps for reproducing the problem (and specifically which WinDriver API call produced the crash), and a copy of the minidump files that were created for the crash along with the WinDriver driver file that you are using (windrvr<version>.sys — e.g., windrvr1200.sys — or a renamed version of this driver / windrvr6.sys or windrvr.sys in earlier versions). You can send the information via our support center.

To see the BSOD before the system reboots and create the minidump crash files, set the following Startup and Recovery system definitions (Start --> Control Panel --> System --> Advanced --> Startup and Recovery)

  • Make sure the Automatically reboot option is unchecked, to avoid automatic reboot when the BSOD is displayed.

  • Under Write Debugging Information, select Small Memory Dump (64 KB). Note the Small Dump Directory path, since this is where the minidump files are created (usually %SystemRoot%\Minidump).

Then reproduce the problem and send the support a copy of the minidump files that were created in the directory where you chose to save the crash files. Look for a "minidump" directory under the directory where you chose to save the crash file and send the support the new dump files that were created in this directory.

Please note as well the options to auto-save the Debug Monitor debug log (available from v11.7.0) and to direct the Debug Monitor debug messages to the OS kernel debugger — as explained in Technical Document #44. These options enable you to save the debug information in the case of an OS crash or hang.
On Windows, in order to send the debug information to a kernel debugger you will first need to install the kernel debugger on another PC and establish a debug session between this PC and your development PC. (See also
